In 1952, Jim Busby was six years old and ready for school, but no school in the area would accept him. His parents refused to accept that. They placed a small notice in local newspapers asking whether other families in Leyden Township were facing the same thing. Seven families answered, and by June, 20 parents had signed on as charter members and LRCA was born.
With little money and no building, these parents made it happen themselves. The first class opened on October 13, 1952, in a rented church basement in Franklin Park. Sixteen children attended, taught by volunteers, and the families raised funds through bake sales and rummage sales. A year later, the program was selected as one of just 12 statewide pilot projects that helped pave the way for Illinois public schools to serve students with intellectual disabilities.
In 1955, with only $2,306 in the bank, the families set out to build a permanent home. It became a true community project. Local contractor Martin Enger of Enger Bros. led construction. He was joined by 91 community organizations, 40 contractors and suppliers, and 265 volunteers who donated their labor. The school opened in January 1957, with every bill paid.
As those first students grew into adults, LRCA's mission grew with them. Once public schools took over education, LRCA shifted its focus to job training and meaningful employment. Local businesses partnered with LRCA by contracting work to its training center.
More than 70 years later, that same founding belief still drives everything we do. Every adult deserves a place to belong, contribute, and succeed.
